Proud to be an American?

I’d like to be, but I’m not. This country has accomplished some wonderful things, but it has also committed evil acts against even it’s own citizens. In my previous post, you see an example of our government conspiring to justify the murder of an unarmed citizen. But this is merely the continuation of this fine american tradition. I lifted this front page image from the New York Times without their permission. Their site credits UMI. I hope uniformed thugs don’t show up at the door to my quite modest little house to demand justice for these large corporations. I’d hate to be shot to death for copyright violation.

Couldn’t agree with you more. The state of the American government, and it’s “justice” system were one of the things that made moving to Belgium not such a difficult decision.
Well, and the beer and chocolate.
Oh, yeah and my Belgian boyfriend.

  2. In a word? Yes! I’m damn proud to be an American! After serving this country in the Army in an area that I still to this day cannot “talk” about, I saw so much horror from a tyrannical dictator that I couldn’t believe my eyes.

It made me appreciate my country even with all it’s faults so much more. If we don’t support our troops where ever they may be, their morale drops so low you wouldn’t believe it. You don’t have to support WHY they’re there, just support THEM!

As for your posting of the article from the Kent State shootings, that was a very long time ago when we as a country were too stupid to go along with change.

I don’t necessarily agree with everything that goes on in the U.S. but I’ll defend it as long as I draw a breath.

I’ll finish this comment off by saying that complacency breeds inaction and indifference. Until we as a people wake up and smell the coffee, we’re doomed to repeat history forever except on a greater scale as time goes on.

Proud? In a word, no. Having spent much of my adult life living in various other countries I have been repeatedly shown this country’s flaws through the eyes of other citizens of the world. Invariably, it is not good.

Having said that, I do agree with the PP that using Kent State as an example is a little out of date. There are so many other more contemporary examples you could use to illustrate your point.

And on the topic of the PP, I’d like to state that my husband was in the military for 8+ years. His father and grandfather were all military men. In short, it is a military family. Not every military family is still proud to be American. While CableDad did experience the more restrictive and abusive side of dictatorships while serving in Saudi during the Gulf War, he still knows the difference between supporting the troops and supporting the idiots who sent them where they’re being ill used and abused. Just because you have a military background does not mean you have to blindly accept an agree with the disastrous decisions our government makes.

If you really want to support our troops find a way to get them the hell out of a quagmire into which they should never have been sent!

I’m proud to be an American in many aspects but the recent administrations actions stemming from the Iraq war have made me lose a lot of respect for this country. I still support the troops cause it wasn’t there call to be there but I want them home asap.
